Things to Avoid in Los Angeles for World Cup 2026 (First-Timer Mistakes)

Fanway Team·2026-05-16·5 min read

Los Angeles is sprawling, car-dependent, and nothing like the movies. For first-time visitors arriving for World Cup 2026, the city has a specific set of traps that catch out fans who haven't been before. Here's what to watch out for.

Transport Mistakes

Don't rent a car assuming it'll make things easier. The instinct for first-timers in LA is to rent a car because the city is spread out. On a normal day, that might be fine. During World Cup 2026, traffic near SoFi Stadium in Inglewood will be brutal on match days. Rideshare surge pricing will be aggressive. If you're staying near downtown or the westside, use rideshare or the Metro K Line to the stadium — it runs directly to Inglewood.

Don't rely on Uber or Lyft for match day. Surge pricing around SoFi Stadium on match day is significant. Factor in 2–3x normal prices if you're taking rideshare right before kickoff or immediately after the final whistle. Walk further from the stadium before requesting a ride, or pre-book at a fixed price.

Don't underestimate distances. On a map, Los Angeles looks manageable. In practice, the distance from Hollywood to SoFi Stadium, Santa Monica to Koreatown, or Venice to downtown is a 30–60 minute drive on a good day. Plan every journey with time buffers. Google Maps default times in LA are often optimistic.

Tourist Trap Mistakes

Don't waste a day on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. It's a street. It smells bad on a hot day. The stars on the ground are unremarkable, the surrounding shops are overpriced, and you will be approached constantly. It's fine for 20 minutes on the way somewhere else, not a destination in itself.

Don't eat on Hollywood Boulevard. The restaurants along Hollywood Blvd exist almost entirely to extract money from tourists who are already there. The food is mediocre at a premium price. Head to Los Feliz, Silver Lake, Koreatown, or Culver City for food that locals actually eat.

Don't pay for a "celebrity home tour." Guides outside Grauman's Chinese Theatre and around Hollywood offer tour buses to celebrity homes. These tours drive past gated estates at 25mph. You see nothing of note and spend $50+ doing it.

Neighbourhood Mistakes

Don't book a hotel in Hollywood thinking it's central. Hollywood is not central for World Cup 2026 purposes. SoFi Stadium is in Inglewood, to the southwest. If you stay in Hollywood, you're adding 45–60 minutes to every match day journey. Downtown LA, Culver City, or anywhere near the Metro K Line gives you a much cleaner route to the stadium.

Don't dismiss downtown LA. First-timers often avoid DTLA based on outdated reputation. The Arts District, Little Tokyo, and the area around Crypto.com Arena have transformed in recent years. There are excellent bars, food, and hotels that put you on the right side of the city for match day transport.

Cultural Mistakes

Don't expect things to run on time. LA operates on a relaxed schedule. Restaurants don't rush you, events start late, and social plans are fluid. If a local says "let's meet at 8," plan for 8:30. This isn't rudeness — it's just how the city works. Build slack into your schedule.

Don't honk in traffic. LA drivers sit in traffic with extraordinary patience. Leaning on the horn — a normal reflex in London or Buenos Aires — will stand you out immediately and is considered genuinely aggressive, not just impatient. Sit, accept the traffic, put on a podcast.

Don't skip the tip. Same rule as any US city: 18–20% minimum at sit-down restaurants and bars. LA service workers are friendly and efficient — tip accordingly.

Match Day Mistakes

Don't underestimate the heat. June in Los Angeles runs 28–35°C with strong sun. SoFi Stadium is partially open-air. Wear sunscreen, bring a hat if the rules allow, and hydrate before you arrive — drinks inside the stadium are expensive.

Don't plan to walk from nearby neighbourhoods to SoFi. The stadium is in Inglewood, which is a residential area without a walkable fan strip nearby. There are no great bars within easy walking distance of the stadium. Have a pre-match plan sorted in the city before heading to the stadium.

Don't leave immediately after the final whistle. Post-match rideshare and Metro queues peak in the 15 minutes after the final whistle. Wait inside the venue or in the stadium concourse for 20–30 minutes. The crush clears quickly and your journey home will be significantly more comfortable.
